You’re a good vegan. But you’re curious about KFC. Is that OK?

Is Beyond Meat at KFC Vegan?

A vegan is a person who holds the principle of emancipation of animals from the exploitation of man.

In order to support this principle, vegans don’t eat animals.

But if they eat at KFC, they’re supporting a company which has made a profit from the exploitation and torture of animals for three or four generations.

And this raises one of those fun questions: Who has a greater positive impact on animal welfare: the secret vegan executive at McDonald’s, pushing toward using fewer animal products and humane treatment of animals, or the person picketing in front of a McDonald’s? This is a question that I’ve been pondering for the last twenty-something years.

But one thing is clear, we live in a society that views corporations as powerful, sentient gods. And corporations are only good at one thing: profit. It’s all they’re built to do. The biggest corporations like coca-cola have literally murdered people in the pursuit of profit. Ones like Chevron would gladly destroy the whole planet to turn a tidy return. They’re emotionless sociopaths operating with machine-like efficiency toward their solitary purpose. Think of them like Terminator.

And whether we like it or not, for better or worse, capitalism in its current state rewards that.

But even from the earliest days of capitalism, Adam Smith and his invisible hand, since we know what a corporation wants, we’re always in control.

That’s really naïve and simplistic, but we do have the treats because we have the dollars. If you want to train corporations, you give them money when they do something good and you boycott when they misbehave. It’s a binary they can comprehend. You can therefore vote with your dollar and make a significant impact.

By supporting this behavior, you’re making it easier for new vegans to have access to vegan options. When a young kid has to eat with his parents, he can opt for something less evil. And a lot of people are already trying it out and finding out killing chickens is stupid. Whoever finally decided to give this Beyond meat thing a whirl at KFC single-handedly saved countless lives. And even Beyond Meat’s stock will go up, encouraging companies like Tyson and Kellog to continue to invest in new meat alternatives.

So can you be a person who is against animal exploitation who also eats Beyond Meat Chicken at KFC? Sure!

I personally probably won’t be partaking. I don’t really consider fast food real food. At best it might stave off hunger on a road trip. At worst it’s poison. Most the time I’d rather go hungry than go to a fast food joint. That’s mostly from years working in food and beverage. And that’s another story.
